How To Fix Forest River Slide-Out Problems?

A slide-out is a built-in and useful feature. It creates additional interior space. Like in every other RV, this feature is also present in the Forest River RV. However, besides its usefulness, it may cause problems and worry owners a lot.

The most common complaints about the Forest River slide-out include, but are not limited to; the slide-out is jammed, the slide-out is not moving, the slide-out has stuck, and slide out making noise.

We aim to provide every bit of information about these problems, including why they occur and how to solve them. Keep reading to find out more.

What are the Symptoms of Forest River slide-out Problems?

Your slide-out’s inability to move in or out when you try to move it may be its most common symptom. It may occasionally be locked and incapable of moving at all. There can be some other symptoms that include the following:

  • Seals coming off the slide-out
  • Rust along the way
  • Corroded electrical connections
  • Broken Seals
  • Faulty Plug
  • Not moving smoothly
  • Difficult to move

What Causes The Forest River Slide-out Problems?

There could be three or four slides out on one RV. A different factor could cause each slide-out failure. It could be a malfunction in the hydraulics or a fault in the motor. There can be many other reasons too. We have accumulated some common reasons, which are given below.

Poor Electrical Wiring Connection

Electricity is used to power the slide-out movements. Many electric issues can cause Forest River Slide problems, such as broken wires, low voltage, fluctuating voltage, or shorted high or low wires.

Burnt Out Motor

A defective motor, especially one that has burned out, contributes to the forest river slide-out’s malfunction. When a motor becomes clogged with dirt and foreign objects, it should be removed and thoroughly cleaned. slide-outs that become stuck are the typical symptoms of a motor problem.

Faulty Switch

Sometimes, neither the hydraulic pump motor nor the slide-out move at all. In such a scenario, the most likely reason is a faulty switch, though it’s a bit silly. Forest River has multiple slides, so you must check all of them.

A Power Issue

Power-related issues include faulty fuses, dead or tripped batteries, and bad breakers. You must look into power sources and different connecting points. Power sources distribute electrical energy, and wire and other connecting elements ensure the proper flow of the energy.

Issues with the power sources or the important connecting parts cause the slide-out not to work properly.

Hydraulic Failure

The movement of the slide-out greatly depends on the hydraulic system of the Forest River. In the event of a hydraulic leak or lack of hydraulic fluid, the slide-out may be misaligned.

Also, when the slide-out switch is on but the slide-out is not moving, you must check the hydraulic pump or leveling system. More specifically, the voltage irregularities of the pump may play a role. Use the voltage measurement tool to measure voltage if it is in the predetermined range.

Lack of Lubrication

A lack of lubrication is the most obvious and frequent cause of slide-out problems. Proper lubrication makes the slide-out move smoothly and fine. Lack of lubrication causes slides to make noise. The issue needs to be resolved immediately because a lack of lubrication causes damage to the slide-out rail.

Foreign Object and Dust

Leaks, dust, or any outside object may obstruct the slide-out line and stop it from operating as intended. You can remove the object to make the slide-out work as before.

How to Fix the Forest River Slide-out Problem?

As you have learned from the previous section, there are many reasons why the slide-out does not work properly. So, depending on the type of problem, the fixing strategy also changes.

Here, we have listed almost all of the fixing strategies. Resolving them will almost always give you a properly functioning slide-out.

Simple Fix 1: Check the Electrical Connection

If the slide-out issue is due to poor electrical connection, it is crucial to start inspecting the wiring harness. Check if the wire is unplugged or disconnected, then simply reconnect.

Look at the voltage rating. If the voltage rating is outside of a predetermined range, it may be the battery that is at fault. The battery is the main cause of any electrical problems in the RV. Solving all these issues may solve the slide-out issue in no time.

Simple Fix 2: Remove Dirt From the Motor

When the slide-out is stuck and not moving at all, start inspecting the motor. Either the motor is burnt out, or the dirt inside the motor is preventing it from functioning properly.

Ensure the switch is turned off so there is no electricity flowing through the wire and motor before you inspect it. Now clean up all the dirt and debris. If the motor is relatively new, check its internal parts.

Simple Fix 3: Replace the Switches

If the slide-out issue is due to the faulty switch, then the best strategy is to replace the switch. Switches are usually connected to the power board that controls the switches. If the power board itself has any issues, replacing the board may solve the issue.

Simple Fix 4: Check the 12V and Motor

You can do the following when the Forest River slide-out does not work due to a power issue. First, check the motor and its associated fuses and breakers to see if they are working properly.

Second, you need to change the power sources if the slide-out is on 12V and has power issues. Change the power source to shore power or a generator. The main purpose is to ensure more than 12V power.

Simple Fix 5: Check the Hydraulic System

Either hydraulic wiring or a problem with the pump causes the slide-out issue. If the wires are in good condition, most likely the pump is burnt out. Another thing to look at is the hydraulic fluid. Even with the switch turned on, the slide-out will not move if the fluid level is low or zero.

Locate the fluid reservoir and determine if the fluid reservoir is empty. Take the necessary steps, including refilling the fluid reservoir and sealing the leak if there is any.

If nothing works out, the hydraulic needs to be replaced. The hydraulic actuator makes the fluid power in the motion power, so it must also check if the actuator is fine.

Simple Fix 6: Lubricate

The lack of lubrication issue can be easily solved. You need a proper lubricating agent. For example, you can use WD 40 to lubricate the line properly.

Simple Fix 7: Remove any Foreign Object

As we mentioned in the earlier section, a foreign object or dust will prevent the slide-out from operating as intended. If that’s the case, you can remove the object. Sometimes the seal of the slide-out comes off or the leak appears. In that case, if you are confident, you can do it yourself or as a dealer to solve the issue.

How Serious are the Forest River slide-out Problems?

Slide-out has nothing to do with how a Forest River runs, so unlike engine problems, slide-out issues are considered moderately severe. It can, however, greatly impact your comfort.

You are in trouble on a trip if the slide-out gets faulty. It will reduce the additional interior space. On the other hand, a fully functioning slide-out creates additional interior space.

Also, if there is a leak on the slide-out, rainwater will find its way inside the RV and damage important appliances.

How Much Does it Cost To Fix the Forest River slide-out Issue?

Several factors determine the cost of fixing the slide-out. The cost of fixing the faulty pump will not be the same as fixing a simple electrical issue.

If the slide-out is faulty due to a faulty motor or fuel pump, then you have to bear the cost of the motor or pump. On the other hand, if simply removing the dust or refilling the fluid reservoir fixes the slide-out, then you do not have to pay much more than for new fluid.

If RV is a new experience for you and you have recently bought one, then solving these issues may be a bit taxing for you. If so, contact your dealer or get help from a mechanic. The cost of a mechanic per hour is around $200.

Conclusion

There you all have it. A slide-out is a great feature for any RV. It makes your RV experience better. Slide-out problems appear when the RV gets old, lacks maintenance, and is not used properly.

It is crucial for an owner to learn about common Forest River slide-out issues and their fixing strategies. It helps you solve common issues, save money, and educate yourself so the mechanic won’t get the opportunity to make you a fool.

We tried to provide everything you need to know about the slide-out problems of the forest river. By following our guide, you can resolve the issues and return to a fully functional slide-out.
